Hugh Masekhela concert

South African jazz great Hugh Masekela, known for his #1 smash hit “Grazin’ in the Grass” and “Coal Train (Stimela)” will be performing in Japan for the first time in eight years!

A magnificent sound that brings to mind the African earth; the timbre of a flugelhorn, brimming with endless warmth and gentleness –world-renowned South African jazz great Hugh Masekela  will be performing at the Blue Note Tokyo in March.

Hugh Masekela began to play the trumpet at age 14, and in 1959 he formed the band the Jazz Epistles with Abdullah Ibrahim (Dollar Brand) and others.
The next year, as the Apartheid regime became increasingly brutal, he went into exile in the United States, and in 1964 married his countrywoman, the singer Miriam Makeba.  In 1968 his smash hit “Grazin’ in the Grass” sold four million copies.
Since the 1970s he has mostly performed on flugelhorn, and alongside his solo career he has collaborated with musicians such as Herb Alpert, Paul Simon, and Japan’s own Keiko Matsui.
Don’t miss this chance to enjoy this powerful and exciting African groove.
