INVITATION TO A SA/JAPAN DIALOGUE TO COMMEMORATE TWENTY YEARS OF DEMOCRACY IN SOUTH AFRICA AND FIFTY YEARS OF SOLIDARITY AND COOPERATION WITH THE PEOPLE OF JAPAN
Theme: Twenty Years of Democracy in South Africa and Fifty years of Solidarity and Cooperation with the people of Japan.
Purpose/Objective: To bring together Japan friends of South Africa to reflect and share experiences on the many achievements gained since the attainment of democracy in South Africa in 1994. It is also an opportunity to celebrate with the people of Japan and those who were at the forefront of our struggle and continue to support peace and economic development in solidarity with the people of South Africa.
In attendance: The occasion will be graced by prominent Japanese from the Government of Japan, the private sector and non-governmental organisations.
Background: The Republic of South Africa commemorated Freedom Day on 27 April as is done annually to celebrate the birth of a new democracy of a country that has walked a long and difficult journey to emancipate itself from the yokes of apartheid, which was declared a crime against humanity by the United Nations.
This year however, marks a turning point in commemorating this auspicious day, as the country is gearing itself to mark twenty years of Democracy in a very special way.
After twenty years of hard work and unity of its citizens, South Africa can put its head high and recount its achievements despite the fact that during this long journey there has been a lot of challenges and that many important things still need to be accomplished.
The Embassy of the Republic of South Africa has lined up a series of activities which will run up to June 2015 to commemorate South Africa’s Freedom. The first of such events will be to launch a Japan-South Africa the SA/Japan Dialogue to celebrate the many achievements which were as a result of very dedicated Japanese individuals, associations and the Government of Japan, to the struggle against apartheid.
The future of the relations between Japan and South Africa based on the role of these citizens and currently being supported by the Government of Japan will be further revealed during the seminar as speaker after speaker highlight their vision for a truly healthy South Africa-Japan relationship.
